mr-knucklepucks-nhl-playoff-predictions-round-2

Mr. Knucklepuck previews the Stanley Cup Finals, and tells us which team will be making history in 2012.

It’s here! May is ending and that means that a new team will soon be hoisting Lord Stanley’s Cup! The New Jersey Devils and the Los Angeles Kings both took different paths to get here, but they are here none the less. Both teams are underdogs, LA made the playoffs in the final week of the regular season and New Jersey, always reliable and dependable, made the playoffs, but with a much lower seed than usual. Lets break down each team and and come up with some conclusions.

Season Series: Devils, 2-0

Reinforcements: Who Will Help the Most

Roy Oswalt

Jobu takes a look around the league to what teams are doing to spark their rotations and lineups.

Today, the Rangers announced that they had come to a contract agreement with Roy Oswalt for the rest of this season. The deal will guarantee him $5MM for the rest of the season, and gives him the opportunity to earn another $1MM in incentives. When you compare it to the deal Andy Pettitte got from the Yankees (2$MM for probably 1-2 months more major league time), it seems like a little much, but I guess he didn’t spend a year in retirement. Anyway, the Rangers aren’t the only team taking a chance on an aging veteran in the hopes of boosting their stock.

Jobu reviews the Yankees series sweep of the Oakland Athletics.

Sorry this is a little late, but holiday weekends tend to mess with my writing schedule. My laziness aside, however, this was a huge series for the Yankees. Sure, the A’s are terrible. Sure, they’re in third place in the AL West and came into this series with a sub-.500 record. But, so what? The Yankees needed to show they could beat up on this team and come into their stadium with a sweep. Thankfully, they did just that. This sweep gave the Yankees five consecutive wins (two to end the series against KC) at a time when they really needed them.

Redemption Song: Kevin Millwood

Mariners starting pitcher Millwood follows through on a pitch to the New York Yankees in the first inning of their MLB American League baseball game at Yankee Stadium in New York

Sometimes, old players aren’t finished. Jobu discusses the resurgence of Kevin Millwood.

We did a few of these Redemption Song posts last season. Basically, they profile a player that was once thought to be on the scrap heap, but are somehow, some way, getting the job done. This time, we’re talking about Kevin Millwood’s unlikely return to prominence with the Seattle Mariners. This one has really caught me by surprise.

Free Ryan Dempster!

Jobu pleads for mercy for Ryan Dempster of the Chicago Cubs.

In baseball, trades happen for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes, players need to dump a bad contract. Other times, teams trade an established star they can’t afford anymore in order to get back younger, cheaper players with high potential. Sometimes, a player just isn’t performing well on his current team, but someone else takes a chance that a change of scenery might help the players snap out of the funk he is in. Sometimes a beloved franchise type player gets traded to a contender so that he can finally win a championship (Ray Borque). I think the Cubs should trade Ryan Dempster just because he doesn’t deserve to be punished by remaning on their terrible team.
