OBSERVATIONS AND RANDOM THOUGHTS FROM THE HUB OF THE UNIVERSE: THE FEELING A DRAFT EDITION

Observations_and_Random_Thoughts_From_the_Hub_of_the_Universe_logo_Ballgame_Final

Jerry weighs in on the draft and catches up with a couple of tid bits from the Sox and Celtics.

Its official. I’m tired of the NFL draft and the spectacle that ESPN has turned it into. To me it represents everything that drives me crazy about the sports talk oriented media; way too much talking, speculating, arrogance, and a distain for anyone who disagrees. Combine this with the fact that no one who I’ve seen, heard or read has demonstrated that they are any better at predicting and/or matching players to teams than the amatuers among us, and then perhaps you will understand why the process annoys me so. Prime Time: Guys I Wish I’d Seen in their Primes

Jobu tells us about some great athletes and why he wishes he’d seen them sooner.

I’ve grown up around sports my entire life. Whether it was the NBA game of the week that made my family into Larry Bird and Boston Celtics fans even though we lived in South America to being the one to discover and fall in love with baseball when I was five years old and my family moved to the United States to now, when I just get to blabber on and on about it on the pages of Jobu’s Rum. I’ve always been a sports fanatic and, much to the chagrin of my girlfriend, I’ll always be one. The only regrets I have is that, although I’ve seen a lot of amazing athletes in my day, I didn’t get to see some of the all-time greats during their prime years. In some cases, I didn’t see the guys play at all. In others, I was just too young, so I either don’t remember them or couldn’t appreciate them at the time. Either way, I’ll pay tribute to them here and now. Continue reading →

OBSERVATIONS AND RANDOM THOUGHTS FROM THE HUB OF THE UNIVERSE: JUST CHECKING IN:

Observations_and_Random_Thoughts_From_the_Hub_of_the_Universe_logo_Ballgame_Final

Jerry Ballgame checks in with all four of the major Boston sports.

Although technically only two of the Hub’s four major franchises are actually in season at this moment, they are all pretty active in one way or another, so let’s take a quick look at all of them. (I’m leaving the Revolution out of the discussion for now, but I promise to take a closer look at them soon for you followers of the true football. (Futbol?) Continue reading →

OBSERVATIONS AND RANDOM THOUGHTS FROM THE HUB OF THE UNIVERSE: THE RETURN OF THE “HUBLET”.

Observations_and_Random_Thoughts_From_the_Hub_of_the_Universe_logo_Ballgame_Final

Jerry Ballgame is back with more of his Hublets, weighing in on David Ortiz, Wes Welker, Julius Irving and even Brian Cashman.

Maybe it’s all those years of working with high school students (or maybe it’s just all those years) but I find my ability to concentrate on any one topic for any length of time, to not be what it used be. So, in keeping with the situation, I’m bringing back the “hublet”. For those of you who have chosen not to recall what a hublet is; it’s simply a shorter observation or random thought- on a variety of topics- than I usually provide from my perspective in the “HUB OF THE UNIVERSE”. Starting with…. Continue reading →

Jobu’s Rum’s Greatest Hits: “I KICK A TOUCHDOWN!”

I_Kick_A_Touchdown_Dempsey_570x300

While Jobu is on vacation, enjoy one of our greatest hits as Jerry Ballgame digs into his vast sports history knowledge to tell us the story of the Kicker, one of the NFL’s least heralded players.

It is generally accepted that the modern NFL was born on the last Sunday of December in 1958, on the chewed up turf of Yankee Stadium. In an overtime battle, often referred to as “the greatest game ever played”, the Baltimore Colts defeated the New York Football Giants, 23-17, to capture the championship.
