Bernard Hopkins: Old Dog With Tricks

Jobu reacts to Bernard’s stunning title win last Saturday.

I hate posts that speculate on who the best ever is at a sport. Frankly, it’s all relative. It’s also impossible to compare athletes from different eras. Rules and training methods simply change too much from era to era for anyone to make an accurate comparison on how good one athlete is to the other. The “best ever” argument is one designed to end in a stalemate. However, you can probably accurately report on an athlete being among the best ever. I think I have to cast my vote here for Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins, at 48 years old, beat Tavoris Cloud this weekend to become the IBF’s light heavyweight champion of the world. Jobu’s Rum’s Greatest Hits: THE GREATEST….FOR NOW

The_Greatest_So_Far_Ali_570x300

While Jobu is on vacation, enjoy one of our greatest hits as Jerry wonders which past athletes could hold their own in their respective sports today.

There is a decided tendency for sports fans and media alike to assume that whoever the outstanding athletes are at the current time in a given sport, that they must surely be the greatest ever. That no one who came before could possibly measure up, and there could never be another as wonderful once they’re gone.  I can understand why people feel that way, what with the advancements in training, nutrition, and pharmaceuticals, it’s very easy to accept that as fact. However, unless you have inside information on the end of the world, believe me, there will be another ‘greatest’ coming around soon enough. While I’m at it, don’t be so quick to dismiss all the ‘greatest’ that went before. I happen to think that there were more then a few of them who could  hold their own in the present, and I’m prepared to name a few.

While Jobu is on vacation, enjoy one of our greatest hits as Jobu reacts to Manny Pacquiao’s shocking defeat at the hands of Juan Manuel Márquez on Saturday night.

When I first heard Manny Pacquiao was fighting Juan Manuel Márquez for the fourth time, I was pretty underwhelmed. Although I felt their last fight should have been won by Márquez (Pacquiao won in a controversial decision), the fact still remained that Pac Man was 3-0 against Márquez. Why did we need to see them fight yet again? As it turns out, the fight not only exceeded my expectations, it showed us something that we’d never seen before and might even have ended the career of one of the best pound-for-pound boxers of all time.
